Earporn: Epik High, Block B and Flumpool

Monday, October 29, 2012

There seems to be an epic void in my blogging life now that I've discontinued Mixtape Mondays where music is concerned so I guess the occasional music post intermittently spaced between points is forgivable right?

Most of you who follow me on twitter sort of know that I've been raving continuously about Epik High's new comeback material after newly being signed under YG Entertainment. I'll be honest - I'm not exactly a hardcore fan of Epik High, and in reality I only ever paid attention to their work after the whole controversy with Tablo and it struck me as stupid, all the accusations some netizens were pitting against him. But I wasn't enough of a fan to actually get involved. Now, I see that even if I had, it wouldn't really have made a difference, but I still feel like a horrible person for not paying attention, because damn, this guy and his group are good. IMO, those netizens just gave themselves and South Korea a bad name and should be responsible for the damage they've cost Tablo. They were dealing with someone's life here, and don't even get me started on the number of artists in S. Korea that commit suicide because of unwarranted netizen backlash. It's like these people get some sick pleasure out of causing such emotional torment.

Thankfully though, Tablo didn't succumb to such a fate, and he came back with a vengeance under YG's wing. And now that Epik High's back with their 7th Album 99 I couldn't be happier for him.

I think the biggest change/revolution for Tablo and Epik High under new management (YG Entertainment) is their change in style and the tone of their music. On this aspect, they're getting mixed reactions from both fans and newly exposed music junkies, but in all honesty, I don't think it's a bad thing. While some argue that you should like everything a group does if you're a "true fan", I don't support blindly liking music just because you like the people that make it (Sorry guys). And thus, those people that aren't exactly happy with the change in Epik High's music as opposed to their earlier hits like Love Love Love are entitled to their opinion. I personally think they're on a phase of self discovery, and a little head pumping music isn't so bad, especially if the music video is equally as fun and laden with deep, meaningful innuendos.

Oh, and murder. Let's not forget murder. Hahaha. Either way, it's hard to be disgusted by a bunch of cutely costumed kids committing bloody acts of bludgeoning (one of them's even dressed like GD! )when Epik High's just having so much fun. After those years under seclusion and not even being able to see the light of day, Tablo sure as heck deserves it.

Haters gonna hate.

I'd like to give another round of applause to Epik High for their other comeback song, UP ft. Park Bom. There's just something to be said about the meaningful, encouraging, head bumping, first pumping song which sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it.  Honestly, I never even thought skate parks existed in South Korea but the setting looks so wonderfully vibrant that I didn't even give it a second thought haha. And not to mention, the music video is so visually appealing that you can use almost every screencap as an awesome desktop background.

See what I mean?

And I think one of the best changes (for the better) that YG has enabled for the group is their awesome livestages. Just that little bit of YG swag added that extra oomph IMO, and just watching it made me wish I could be on stage with them.

Yehp, definitely EPIK.

Epik High aside, another group I've been thoroughly enjoying is Block B. They came out as rookies just about the same time that B1A4, B.A.P., and Boyfriend did, and somewhere in my mind I'm thinking what the heck was up with letter B boygroups that year? That being said, I hadn't paid Block B much attention either when they debuted because in all honestly, I was distracted by the three aforementioned groups. That being said, I'm still not as much of a fan of them as I am the other three, and I can't even seem to muster up the enthusiasm to find out the other members' names (the only one I'm vaguely familiar with is Zico for obvious reasons) but I'll be damned if I lie and say that I don't enjoy their B-Boy music. Right now, I'm particularly enamored by their song, Nillili Mambo. It's just so damn fierce, and I currently have it on my iTunes on loop. It's sort of like how B.A.P. started with WarriorPower, and No Mercy before they turned all boyband cute with Crash and Stop It (both of which I still like, just not as much).
,

I think Simon and Martina did a pretty good job of enumerating just how silly and amusing this music video was, despite its authentic and wonderful setting in Vietnamn, so I'm not even going to bother. Instead I'm going to spam you with screencaps of particularly appealing scenes in the MV (I actually typed 'appearing' instead of 'appealing' ohnoes. I think my English is turning in to Engrish. x_x)

Yehp, definitely earporn right there.

If hardcore KRap and Hiphop aren't your thing, then maybe you'd do with some soft JRock/Ballad type songs? My latest discovery in the JRock scene comes with an endearing band called Flumpool. A rather unorthodox sounding bandname, yes. But that doesn't take away from how completely and utterly awesome they are.

As I've discuessed before, it isn't actually the easiest of things getting media from Japan what with all their insane copyright laws. Even decent videos on Youtube are hard to come by and they're not as open to the public as South Korea has been with their music industry. But recently, entertainment agencies in Japan have been taking steps to make their music more accessible to their foreign audience. One of their recent pursuits has been throwing concerts for JRock bands (which apparently have a larger audience than mainstream Jpop, save of course bands and groups from Johnny's Entertainment and AKB48) accross Asia. Yay!

I'm really looking forward to the day that Flumpool gets to come here to the Philippines, but I'll be lying if I said I wasn't entirely baited by their cute lead singer, Ryuta Yamamura (山村 隆太).
Flumpool Ryuta Yamamura 山村 隆太 Flumpool Ryuta Yamamura 山村 隆太

IMO, he looks like a cute Japanese Adrien Brody and he doesn't necessarily have the best voice in JRock, but it has this characteristically soft tone to it that just captures you when you hear it.

So that's it. Sorry for the long post. I was just so music and fangirl-ing-ness deprived so I had to let it out. Hopefully this isn't a regular thing. My blog is mainly an outlet anyway and I'm keeping that way. Even if I have to use it as fangirl catharsis lol.

Any music you'd like to recommend? Foreign, Western or Local? Don't be afraid to drop me a line. I'm always open to new things (obviously).

Art Post: Chinen Yuri

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

Ohemgee I actually got some art done haha. This drawing has been sitting around uncolored for awhile so I thought I'd post it up.

Ah, Chinen Yuri. Not exactly my favorite in Johnny's, not even in Hey! Say! JUMP, but he really does have a certain appeal to him. I think it's the fact that he and I are almost the same height haha. Ah, the plight of the shorties in the world. I remember posting an art post on him four years ago and is it a little sad to say that he hasn't changed much since then? Hahaha.

His hair's a little longer here than how it is now, so forgive me if he doesn't look so up to date. Also - I got lazy with the clothes LOL. At least I wasn't lazy enough not to color him right?

Sembreak Goal #1 Learning Japanese

Sunday, October 21, 2012

So as I mentioned previously, I am currently on my semester break - essentially the calm before the hellstorm that is college life resumes. Hopefully I'll be able to balance semi-coherent blogposts and academics a lot better now that I'm not actually under a strict blogging schedule and have fallen back to a more leisurely style of posting.

That being said, the fun thing about this short break is I actually have time for my other hobbies - art, reading, writing and right now, learning Japanese ♥♥♥♥

Tuttle Language Library Japanese Kanji and Kana / Essential Japanese Grammar

I've actually been self-teaching myself Japanese since I was in grade school, but really only to the point of conversational speech and being able to understand anime/dramas with having to wait for subtitles, never to the point of actually considering myself anywhere close to literate in the language. Even then, I'd only be able to understand - much less speak in proper grammar or tenses.

A year ago, I decided I'd try to level my proficiency up and actually learn to read Hiragana and Katakana, but only recently when I decided I'd like to try to pursue my post-graduate studies in Japan did I decide I'd go the full way and actually learn Kanji, grammar, writing and composition. So here I am -

Tuttle Language Library Essential Japanese Grammar

I saved up and bought a buttload of books last summer - grammar books, dictionaries, Kanji manuals and workbooks. I am especially in love with my books from Tuttle - definitely worth every penny. Only problem was that when school came, I didn't really have much time to continue studying. Thank goodness for sembreak because now I at least have enough time to get a few chapters of work done.

Studying is actually a lot easier when I use this cool memorization kit my brother gave me haha. It uses a simple yet clever principle in optics. So I highlight words in either red or green, and depending on which filter I use, I'll be able to see them or not.

Tuttle Language Library Essential Japanese Grammar Memorization Kit
Red or Red - Now you see it

Tuttle Language Library Essential Japanese Grammar Memorization Kit
Green on Red - Now you don't.

Pretty nifty eh? I'm making some headway, but I still find reading infinitely easier than actually writing, so I'll probably need more practice in that department. In the mean time, I've been making use of my new found skills by re-reading some of my old Japanese Magazines that I never really read (I just looked at the pretty pictures of all the handsome men). Yay for literacy!

And when I'm feeling disheartened or particularly lazy, all I really have to do is remind myself that Okamoto Keito lives in Japan and he'll probably be impressed by the fact I'm Japanese literate (despite the fact that he's fluent in English, because really, being multilingual is sexy). Really that's all the motivation I need haha.

岡本 圭人, Okamoto Keito ARMS
Who wouldn't study for those arms? haha

Hope the rest of the people out there are making good use of your time. If not, who am I to tell you what or what not to do. It's your life - whatever you wanna do. And so I leave you with this:

It's not Japanese, but I just had to. Tell me you didn't laugh and start singing along. If you didn't, you're not human.

Peace out,

Ada

Art Post: The World Ends With You

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Sorry for my absence the past week. TT_TT I miss being able to blog and comment on other people's blogs but somehow I can't even find the time for that. The funny thing is that despite that fact, I still managed to squeeze in a little bit of video game time. I know, I am such a video game geek.

This month I've actually found myself replaying one of my favorite DS games by Square Enix - The World Ends With You (TWEWY).

The World Ends With You by Square Enix

Because it's from Square Enix it has a very Kingdom Hearts feel to it and I'm a real fan of the art. It's just so edgy and comic-booky. And to make it even better, the character design and development is pretty awesome i my book. The story follows the protagonist, Neku Sakuraba and his journey of self discovery in a parallel universe set in modern-day Shibuya. The fact that it's set in Shibuya is pretty awesome, because aside from Harajuku, Shibuya's probably one of the places in Tokyo Japan that you'll find awesome fashion and all kinds of eccentric people.

My personal favorite characters are Rhyme and Joshua but their fashion in the story leaves more to be desired.

Joshua from The World Ends With You by Square EnixRhyme from The World Ends With You by Square Enix

In terms of fashion, my faves would have to be Neku and Shiki though I probably wouldn't be caught dead dressing that way now. In high school maybe, but now? No haha.

Shiki from The World Ends With You by Square EnixNeku from The World Ends With You by Square Enix

So instead I chose to draw, Shiki and Neku in my own style haha.
Neku and Shiki - The World Ends With You Fan Art by Ada

I actually posted a preview of this on my Facebook Page a few weeks ago haha. I didn't think it'd take me so long to actually get it colored.
Neku and Shiki - The World Ends With You Fan Art by Ada

So as you can see, my style of drawing is monumentally different from the actual video game art, but I still think I was able to capture the characters well enough haha.

I really really really want to do some art of all the Reapers + Beat and Rhyme, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to find the time.

Meanwhile, why don't you guys give the game a try? It's pretty addictive, the food art'll probably make you drool and the fashion is awesome - an awesome testimony to what actual Shibuya is like. And you might just pick up some life lessons along the way.

Sprout Ep2: Screenshots, Music

Sprout J-drama Screenshot - Miku and Friends Hey guys! Last week I posted about my new found love for a Jdrama called Sprout, starring some of my favorite Johnny's, Chinen Yuri and Jesse Lewis, as well as Hashimoto Ryosuke, Yasui Kentaro and Tanaka Juri as side characters relevant to the drama.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't Johnny's baited into this drama, and while the drama may run at a pace too slow for most, I find it oddly refreshing.

The drama has taken a long stride away from the manga it was based off, taking liberties in actually giving roots to the main character's feelings. I'm glad they did so because now her jealousy makes sense. Is it justified? Nope, it still isn't, but at least it makes sense now haha.

I was excited for this episode for two main reasons:

1) I actually wanted to see Jesse get some lip action LOL. (Don't worry, he does).

2) I wanted to see what other Grouplove songs they'd manage to fit in.

Not to my disappointment, they craftfully managed to fit in another Grouplove song in addition to Betty's a Bombshell from last week. Awesomesauce.

Cruel and Beautiful World - Grouplove

Go ahead and close the door
I'll stand outside in the rain
A little bird just told me so
It's time to start over again

So I'll run out and take this boat
Far away from these shores

And I'll reach behind an enemy line
and find my curable cure

(Chorus)
Cause it's a cruel and beautiful world
and I got my girl
and if it seems like we're falling behind
or just slipping on top from the mouths of our mind

I buried a treasure
far off near the desert
I'm trying to find my way there
It's been too long since I've been myself
And my eyes can't see anymore

and there's a song inside of this hard of mind
and I'd like to sing it to you
Cause there's an earthquake shaking inside my country
Now what am I gonna do?

(chorus)
Cause it's a cruel and beautiful world
and I got my girl
and if it seems like we're falling behind
or just slipping on top from the mouth of our mind (hey)

Cause it's a cruel and beautiful world (cruel and beautiful world)
and I got my girl (he's got his girl)
and if it seems like we're falling behind (seems like we're falling behind)
or just slipping on top from the mouth of our mind

I'm not going to go as in-depth on this episode or this drama as I usually do with my movie reviews because I don't want this to turn into an episode synopsis, nor do I want to let out spoilers who haven't watched the episode yet. Instead, I'll post some relevant screen shots for your pleasure of viewing. Seriously - the shots in this drama are beautiful. Every shot seems like it was taken through an instagram filter *_*

Please credit if you're taking any of these - they took me ages to screenshot x_x

Lol I'm pretty sure you can tell who my Bias is in this drama based solely on sheer number of shots, but I'm also sure you can build up the story from these shots (albeit a bit imbalanced) :P

I honestly can't stop giggling at the height difference between Chinen and the other actors and actresses. It may be true that he has the freshest aura out of them all, but it's almost comical how his shoulder doesn't even match up to the shoulder fo the girl he's supposedly dating. In fact, he gets most of his height from the volume of his hair LOL. It's okay Chii, we still love you :P

Sigh. Great music, wonderful cinematography but a rather mediocre plot. Hey, at least we have cute boys! :P
