Today I'll be reviewing an awesome brush from the awesome people at The Primp Pad, one of the great shops that also happens to be one of my sponsors for my huge Thank You Giveaway. Join now if you haven't already.
The Sephora Collection Retractable Tapered Foundation Brush was sent to me for review and honestly, it couldn't have come at a more perfect time. I've been looking for a good portable brush to use for touchups when I'm away from home!
The packaging at first glance is sleek and eyecatching, and it comes in one of my favorite colors, turquoise. It's just large enough to fit into the palm of my hand which makes it the perfect size for travel or just to fit into your kikay kits and/or makeup bag. At first, I was dubious about the quality of the brush, as most travel brushes tend to be of sub-par quality and don't really match up to full-sized brushes.
When I opened the brush up, boy was I surprised. It wasn't as bad as I thought, and in fact, it trumped a lot of the makeup brushes I used to own. You can tell from the picture below that it's pretty dense and the cut of each fiber is soft and tapered. The shape of the brush makes it perfect for precision application and its dense fiber holds product perfectly for smooth blending. The brush is so evenly and well cut that it's almost like a brush-pencil.
One of the things that I've noticed about tapered brushes is that because of the pointed cut, the bristles tend to prick the skin, making the bristles and fibers irritating. BUT, this one wasn't like that at all. The fibers were so soft and evenly cut that none of the strands stuck out and caused irritation despite being synthetic (if I'm not mistaken). So added all up, this brush is soft but still dense, and the quality of make is spectacular in how each strand is precisely placed and cut. Check out how even the strand distribution is in the picture below.
Another plus about this brush is that while it retains the quality of a professional makeup brush, it's spectacularly travel-friendly. One of the things you have to worry about when carrying travel brushes is the dirt because you don't actually get to clean it on the spot and instead have to clean it at home. As such, most of the time, you get your makeup kit dirty when you place a used brush in it. For this brush, however, you don't have to worry about that at all because it comes with a nice cap that keeps the brush's shape and acts as a shield from the rest of your makeup kit.
One of the other worries when carrying a makeup brush for travel is maintaining its shape. Let's face it, when you place a brush into a cramped makeup kit, there's no telling what shape it'll come out after it's been there for a long time. The shape is especially important for a tapered brush like this because losing its shape means it'll also lose its use. Additionally, some capped brushes also tend to become misshapen because the cap catches on to some bristles and bends them when you close the brush. Good thing this brush has the perfect solution for these problems.
The brush comes with an auxiliary shaft which you can pull up over the brush bristles before capping it off, so that when you cap the brush off, no bristles get stuck in the cap and become misshapen. I've been using this for awhile now and I can say it's pretty handy!
Overall this is a really useful brush to have. One thing I've encountered though is that it's a little difficult to clean, as I have an additional step of cleaning the inside of the auxiliary shaft and it takes a little longer to dry than the rest of my brushes. But despite multiple washings I haven't encountered any shedding or rusting, so this brush still gets a good rating from me. I've been using this for foundation/concealer touchups and carry it with me in my bag. It's become my makeup kit's new best friend haha.
So what do you guys think? I'm sure this brush should find its way into every girl's makeup kit. It's just so useful and convenient. If you're interested in it you can find it sold at The Primp Pad under its ON-HAND stock for only 348 pesos :) Check them out below!
