Etude Goodbye Pore Ever Primer Essence vs Stick

Etude House Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick versus Pore Primer Essence Review and ComparisonHey guys! It seems like I'm on an Etude House roll lately. I hope you're not fed up of the brand. I happen to love it, and I'll admit, I'm rather biased toward it, but for good reason! They have awesome products. One of my fave products, and the topic of one of my more popular posts has always been their Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick (click to see review).

I mentioned in that post that they have an essence variant (Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Essence), somewhat comparable to the far more expensive Benefit POREfessional. I was never really able to make a review on this before and a lot have been asking me what the differences/advantages/disadvantages of the two are. To address all those questions, I'll be doing a review on the Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Essence while pitting it against its stick counterpart. You might also want to read my previous review for more info.

The Claims
So first and foremost let's check out each of the claims of these babies. We all know these are both basically made to cover up pores and fine lines to give a smooth canvas to the face - why have two versions then?
Etude House Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick versus Pore Primer Essence Review and Comparison Ingredients Etude House Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick versus Pore Primer Essence Review and Comparison Ingredients
Honestly - they even have the same description. Most would think it's really a matter of preference, but if you take a closer look at the ingredients, you'll see the difference. The pore primer stick has more ingredients mostly for polymerization (making it solid) and the silicone derivatives are a lot bulkier than than those found in the essence, and there are more drying components in the stick. To put things in simpler terms, the pore-filler of the Stick is, for lack of a simpler term, chunkier and its ingredients make it so that the finish of the stick is more of a matte finish than that of the Essence which is dewy. One of the biggest difference, IMO is that the Pore Primer Stick has Mango Seed Butter, mostly used as a coagulant but also serves as a natural moisturizer without the added shine.

Whether these ingredients are relevant to you or not, all I'm trying to say is that they really are different products. All they have in common is that they aim to do the same thing :D

First Impressions
Etude House Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick versus Pore Primer Essence Review and Comparison

I originally bought the Pore Primer Stick mostly because it was what was available (The Pore Primer Essence was out of stock). Either way I liked the ease of use of it all. I didn't have to really blend anything in, plus the stick just felt so smooth on my skin. Upon reexamination, I probably would've still bought the Stick over the Essence because of its SMELL. The Pore Primer Stick smells markedly better than the Pore Primer Essence. It has a nice subtle floral smell to it, whereas the Pore Primer Essence almost smells like watered down glue (it's actually not that bad, I just have a very sensitive nose).

This can be seen in two ways. On one hand, while the Pore Primer Essence may not smell as good, some people would prefer it because of the lack of added fragrances. It's also very much a basic concoction as opposed to the stick, making it less irritable to the skin.

Packaging and Price

The Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick is PHP428 (~10.5 USD) for 4.5 grams of product. I bought my first stick of it late November and I only just run out of it now (late March). That's 4 months of everyday usage. Not bad.

The Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Essence, however, is PHP498 (~12 USD) for 20mL of product. Assuming I use 0.2 mL for my entire face everyday, the essence will probably last me a little over 3 months with everyday usage. Also not bad, and you can actually get away with using it longer if you're frugal with your product. It's not like you need to prime your entire face - just concentrate on the key areas. It's also pretty blendable so a little goes a looooo~ng way.

Coverage and Efficacy
Scent and first impressions aside, I can honestly say both of these products do what they promised on my skin. The only real difference noticeable is the finish they give once settled.
Etude House Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick versus Pore Primer Essence Review and Comparison

You see a pretty obvious difference between the texture of my bare face and my face with Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Essence and Pore Primer Stick. I did a side-by side comparison just to show you guys. Both do a good job of covering up my pores but you can see that the essence leaves a dewy-er finish than that of the stick. It's also more translucent with the way it covers up pores, you can still see some of their depths, but when layered over with BB Cream or foundation, you see practically no difference at all.

I prepared some rather revealing super macro photos of my skin, just to show you guys how well these babies work. I hope you guys don't judge the condition of my skin after this D:
Etude House Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick versus Pore Primer Essence Review and Comparison

The Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Essence covers up my pores pretty well and does a good job of bouncing light off my face in the right directions to create an illusion of a smoother face and dewy finish. You can see what I was saying about the translucency of the essence because while your skin might feel smooth to the touch, you can still somewhat make out the pores. Again, no need to worry - going over it with a bit of BB cream or foundation leaves you with a smooth canvas.

Below, you can see the results of the Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick.
Etude House Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick versus Pore Primer Essence Review and Comparison

The Pore Primer Stick is better when it comes to hiding fine lines and also leaves a matte finish instead of a dewy one. The fact that it's chunkier and flesh-tinted also helps with the opacity when covering up pores. However, I find that the results of the Essence when used with BB cream is better than the stick when used with BB cream because the BB cream seems to adhere better to the essence.

Both have pretty good sebum control over the day, though from experience, the Primer Stick holds better in hotter conditions. I don't really need to blot when I use the stick, but I experience more shine with the Essence. It depends on your skin's own natural oil production.

Here's the finished look with full makeup (BB Cream + setting powder).
Etude House Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Stick versus Pore Primer Essence Review and Comparison

So which do I like better?
Being completely honest, I really do like the Pore Primer Stick better, but where price is concerned I can honestly go either way.

I have combination skin that tends to get oily where my pores are concentrated, so I prefer the matte finish of the Primer Stick. People with drier skin might want to get the essence since it's less irritating and gives you a healthier finish.

Also, some may prefer the Pore Primer Essence due to hygienic issues, but honestly I'm not even that nitpicky about it. As long as you use your products with your face and hands clean, and as long as you don't share them, there really shouldn't be much to worry about.

Despite all the differences of the two products, I think these two products are still a much more affordable alternative to more expensive pore primers out there.

So what do you guys think?

I've used the essence for ages, did a good job at covering my pores but stopped working after 3-4 months for some reason lol. The samples still work on me tho XD I've never tried the stick version! I might try it now that I've heard the finish is matte ^^

eyahnism said...

They look almost the same :) I think I will go to the essence ;) I don't really have huge pores so I think that won't affect me with the difference :)

Ada Agupitan said...

:o I wonder why it stopped working. I'm a little worried now hahaha. Good thing I bought a backup of my stick version :P I think I'll try alternating between the two just to see how my skin reacts :P I super love the finish of the stick version. Even on your finger tips it feels so smooth :)

Ada Agupitan said...

My pores aren't that huge either, but when I sweat they tend to get bumpy from sebum accumulation throughout the day (but at least they don't get clogged). I mostly use the pore primer products for sebum control as opposed to coverage :P Pero in fairness, mas tumatagal talaga makeup ko kapag ginagamit ko 'to haha

This a really great thorough review and comparison of both products. Looks like a great alternative to the benefit porefessional. I wonder if this product is available in the UK! will have to check it out.

Nice review.. I never use this before... I think I should buy it, since I have big pores.. ~
is the primer stick more easy to blend? how about the staying power? I'm interest with the stick one instead of the essence >.<

btw, I decided to bought the berry baby choux :D
hope it works well on me >.<
Still waiting it come in my house, since I bought it online ~

Ada Agupitan said...

I don't think it's available in the UK, but you can find it in a lot of online shops! Some sell it cheaper than how much I bought it and some sell it more expensive. Including shipping costs, the prices might differ! You should try it out! If you have similar skin to mine, you should have a pretty good experience with it :)

Ada Agupitan said...

Yehp! The Pore Primer Stick has been one of my face essentials for a pretty long time now! Thanks for dropping by!

Ada Agupitan said...

They're both very blendable, but the Essence is more appropriate if you want to cover a large area of your face. The stick is more appropriate for spot-coverage, like if your pores are in one particular area. The stick is also better for oilier skin IMO, but some people might think otherwise. BUT! Since you're buying the berry baby choux base, it actually has pretty good pore coverage as well, so I'm not sure if you still need this product. Try checking if the base is enough for your pore coverage first, because it's pretty good for mine :) I hope the baby choux base works as well for you as it did for me!

I've used the essence before but many thanks to your review Ada, I'm now planning to try the stick~

I wish I had better before and afters - It's hard to capture how well this works with my camera hahaha. It took a while to get my skin to this state :P Puberty was hell, but thanks! At least my efforts for getting clearer skin have somehow been acknowledged hahaha~ Thanks for dropping by!

Ada Agupitan said...

Yehp! They're definitely some of Etude House's more popular products. They get sold out so quickly!

Tessa said...

The stick looks better, you have a pretty face!

Ada Agupitan said...

Thanks! I think the stick works better for me since my skin is more oily than dry :) I'm also not very fond of the dewy look, but when you put foundation on top of the essence the dewy finish isn't there anymore :) Thanks for dropping by!

do you apply this before or after bb cream/foundation? :))

Ada Agupitan said...

Oh my - I have so many awards lined up, but thanks! I'll try to do an award compilation post as soon as possible! Thanks for nominating me!

Ada Agupitan said...

It's for BEFORE applying BB cream/ foundation. it fills in fine lines and pores so you start off with a smooth canvas to apply your foundation/bb cream on so it doesn't settle into pores and fine lines :) it also controls sebum production. Hope this helped!

Yehp! There are other products like this out there, but they're all very expensive. This one's good and affordable too! :)

Tiffany Martin said...

Is it possible to use BOTH products together for maximum coverage + dewy finish?

Ada Agupitan said...

It would be possible, but I don't think I'd risk it because using one on top of the other means more layers and more layers eventually does lead to caking, and while this product does smoothen out the skin surface, it doesn't stop caking if you do end up using too much makeup on your face.

It's also possible that it may cause your foundation/bb cream to slip because the surface of the two products are designed to be adhered to by foundation/bb cream but not to each other. Think of it as putting two north pole ends of a magnet together. They just don't really match well.

Hope this helped :)

Tiffany Martin said...

Oh I hate caking, it was just a thought because I do like the dewy glow of the essence but your skin looks PERFECT with the stick (naturally I'm like, how about both?).

I also LOVE your Choux review, your skin looks like so amazing/model pretty ^ _ ^ Now I want to try all three of them.

Nice post! I badly need this as my pores on that area (same as your posted photos) are overly large! But I think I would go for the stick as i have combi to oily skin:) thanks for sharing! :)

Ada Agupitan said...

It goes out of stock pretty quickly! If you want it you can actually ask the lady at the boutique counter to reserve one for you and call you when the next shipment comes in! :)

Ada Agupitan said...

Yehp! The stick seems like the right choice. This is a godsend for people like me who can't afford more expensive primers x_x

I feel you! I got my Benefit Porefessional sample tubes during an event! Can i apply stick to my face after cleansing and tone? And after that no make up put in..pls responce

xena said...

Ada pls responce.coz i want to try..

Ada Agupitan said...

The product works best as a primer/base. It fills in pores only texture-wise but doesn't provide color coverage.

You can definitely apply this after cleansing and toning, but I recommend topping it off with a light liquid foundation or even just a light dust of setting powder so your skin has a smooth finish :)

Sorry for the late reply!

Jaree Romero said...

Wow~ The stick one is the best!

Ada Agupitan said...

Yep! It's a lot cheaper than other pore concealers out there :)

Ann Quiogue said...

Great review! I saw Benefit's POREfessional it's really expensive. I want to get one so I headed to Etude House right away and saw these two but didn't get to buy immediately 'cause I'm confused if I'll get the stick or essence. I use Etude's collagen face powder everyday but I feel it's not enough like my face gets quite oily on the cheek area after maybe 6hrs. I have a dry skin but the cheek area tends to get oily. You think the stick one could be a great idea? Thanks!

Ada Agupitan said...

Since your oiliness is localized, I would definitely recommend the stick! It's easier to target which parts of your face you need the pore coverage on. For me, I use the stick only on my cheek and t-zone area. The stick's also a bit better at controlling oil than the essence :)

This is great! Thanks Ada :)

Hi! Should the stick be applied before or after the Wonder Pore Freshner Mist? Thanks!

Ada Agupitan said...

The stick should be applied before any of your makeup as a primer/base. The Wonder Pore Freshner Mist, as I've used it and seen other people used it is for intermittent care for your skin in the middle of the day when you feel your skin is clammy, clogged or congested. The way I use the mist is by blotting first and then spraying the mist for a hydrating effect.

The mist can also be used after cleansing the face and after toner for a fresh face :)
